Eat your heart out, July snow!

Well, July's snowfall has been put to shame. We are now in the middle of the coldest Antarctic blast in 50 years. Awesome. We're into our 3rd day of snow on the ground and there's more set to fall tonight.

Of course, Rambo dropped her lambs the day before the snow arrived which was not sensible and also not expected. The other 3 sheep are yet to give birth and I'm hoping that they will hold off for a bit until this cold weather clears. They are massively pregnant though. I'm amazed they can still walk. Rambo's lambos...

Last weekend was particularly eventful as we had Sherry, Roger and Angus visit us. It was Richard's birthday on Saturday so mum decided the best thing to do would be to break her ankle... which she did in a slow motion slip down a path. At the time people decided it was just a sprain so we didn't go to the hospital. Instead she continued to make a birthday dinner (no one could stop her... she was determined) for Richard so she hobbled around for the rest of the evening and into the next day. Sherry, Roger and Angus all left on Sunday and mum and Richard left that afternoon to go via a doctor in Palmy. When they got there the news was reporting snow to sea level in Wellington and hazardous driving conditions. So they came back to the farm. Ans so did the snow.

Dog face LOVED the snow. He spent much of his time chasing snowballs and galloping around like an idiot. And getting a chilly anus....

And frosty nose...

Richard managed to drive back to Wellington on Monday afternoon once the roads were reopened but Mum decided she was better staying here so she could keep her now plastered foot up and not having to be in a car for 3 hours. She's finding it very difficult to relax and constantly wants to be up and doing things against the doctor's orders. She also decided to go for a 'walk' to the lookout in the snow, on crutches, against freezing winds. But we wrapped her up well...

Marty and I went on a drive to Norsewood for a few supplies and got a breathtaking view of the Ruahine Ranges from Ngamoko Rd. So spectacular with everything covered in snow.....

The only one who seems to be handling this weather well is Piwaka. Being raised on the Central Plateau she is used to this kind of weather and has grown herself an enormous woolly coat. I doubt she even feels the cold....

The ducks didn't care too much either although they did blend into the snow well and looked like just beaks and legs against the white backdrop....

I had to cancel work yesterday due to road closures and general dodginess of driving. Marty did too but has today decided to brave the black ice in order to tend to business. I'm giong to try and get out tomorrow, with Mum in tow, and go to Palmy. Mum needs her temporary plaster changed and I need to earn some money.

In less than a week we are off to Cambodia for 8 days (plus 2 in Kuala Lumpur). This trip has come up so quickly. We are incredibly unprepared. We have no real idea of how we are going to get around, we only just got our vaccinations done in time, I have no appropriate clothing to take with me and I have no money. Luckily things will be cheap once we get there.

Anyway, I'm going to try and take Mum to Norse wood to buy the paper now.

Ciao

The highs and lows of rural life

It snowed a week or so ago when that really cold snap hit NZ. I was in Wellington so missed it - typical! But Marty thankfully took some photos. Here is a pretty one...

And then last night we had a small smattering of snow again but not enough to do anything exciting with. Not like 2 years ago when we went skiing in the paddock next door. And by skiing I mean that I sat on a 50km/h sign and slowly bottom-shuffled my way down a hill. But after the snow last night the sky cleared and has set us up for a beautiful (but incredibly windy day)...

DOUBLE RAINBOW... WHOA! ALL THE WAY! (Trust me it is a double rainbow)

And after that beautiful sight I came back to the warmth of the fire to find the dog sniffing an empty box intently. He wouldn't leave it alone so I went over and picked it up and got spiked by this enormous tree weta. She was not happy that I had disturbed her sleep...

Luckily my finger hasn't rotted off just yet. If it does it may be hard to continue the blog. Maybe I will have a scribe like AA Gill. I think I would like that.

I need coffee.
